This is my first of a series of posts I’ll be making about companion plants. Companion plants are plants that either repel harmful bugs, attract them away from produce, or poison them. They are the all-natural and organic gardener’s first choice for insect relief.
Companion plants,…

fighting to save the name of pink slimeFirst of all the website’s name is The
thecattlenetwork.com says pink slime actually makes the meat better. OH YEAH? Because the meat held up five days better in a retail display than plain beef and because it improves the “fresh color”. Well, that’s actually disgusting. Meat isn’t supposed to look fresh after five days in a retail display.

Lean Finely Textured Beef (LTFB), more commonly referred to as “Pink Slime” is gaining more attention from the public these days. New Jersey just put a ban on the ingredient in their school system. Good for them. LFTB - which I don’t think deserves to be narrowed down to an acronym; pink slime is way more fitting - is the ingredient put into ground beef to enhance the color, preserve the meat, and eliminate bacterias from the meat. It is made from the fatty trimmings of meat, which are susceptible to e. coli and salmonella. To make these portions safe to eat the fatty trimmings are sprayed with ammonia in order to kill the bacteria. The fatty trimmings are then mixed in with “regular” untreated ground beef and put on the shelves. And there you have your good ol’ American burger. How do you like those beef patties?

This is why, I used to eat butter rather than so called vegetable spreads as I believed them to be unnatural and plastic tasting. I once put a tub of margarine out for the birds as I had no fat balls. The did not touch it and after a month it was still sitting there looking much the same. Now I do not eat either butter or margarine…
Do not eat what ants would not touch. Top right: margarine. Left: reduced fat margarine. Bottom right: natural butter. Look at the ants they were on that maragine diet?
I normally eat butter, but it hasn’t really agreed with me since I’ve been pregnant so I switched to Earth Balance Buttery Spread, which is organic and lactose-free. It is actually really tasty and cheaper than the organic butter I was buying.

Farmer Alan Madison fills a seed hopper with Monsanto hybrid seed corn near Arlington, Illinois, U.S. A group of organic and other growers say they’re concerned they’ll be sued by Monsanto if pollen from seeds like these drift onto their fields.
Click the photo to read more. Monsanto has won another lawsuit agains Organic farmers who were fighting against the company in order to prevent the giant corporation from being able to sue for patent infringement.
“But perhaps the most alarming ingredient in a Chicken McNugget is tertiary butylhydroquinone, or TBHQ, an antioxidant derived from petroleum that is either sprayed directly on the nugget or the inside of the box it comes in to “help preserve freshness.” According to A Consumer’s Dictionary of Food Additives, TBHQ is a form of butane (i.e. lighter fluid) the FDA allows processors to use sparingly in our food: It can comprise no more than 0.02 percent of the oil in a nugget. Which is probably just as well, considering that ingesting a single gram of TBHQ can cause “nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears, delirium, a sense of suffocation, and collapse.” Ingesting five grams of TBHQ can kill.”
